Imagine going to bed hungry every single night. Your stomach aches, your head hurts, and you feel weak and sick. The spoonful of rice you had for dinner did nothing to stop your hunger pains. You worry if there will be any food to eat tomorrow.
For almost 1 billion people around the world, this is what bedtime is like.
Why is this happening? Why are all these people going hungry? One word: famine.
Famine is when people in a large area have little or no food to eat for long periods of time—weeks, or sometimes months. There are many causes of famine. Some we can’t control, others we can. Whatever the causes, the effects of famine are huge.
